A/Prof Paul Vasey has been a fully qualified Medical Oncologist for 15 years. He practices primarily in Brisbane out of the Wesley Medical Centre, as a partner of HOCA (Haematology and Oncology Clinics of Australasia). In 1988, A/Prof Vasey qualified with a MBChB in Scotland and completed his general internal medicine training in 1991. While working for Cancer Research UK, he was Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, Scotland from 1992-1996. He obtained a MSc in Clinical Pharmacology i9n 1994 and a research doctorate MD in 1996.

 

From 1996 to 2003, A/Prof Vasey was the Cancer Research UK Senior Lecturer and then reader in Medical Oncology and Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow after which he became Director of the West of Scotland Clinical Trials Unit, the second largest cancer trials unit in the UK, from 2001 to 2004. A/Prof Vasey moved to Australia in 2004 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in March 2005. He was also a Senior Staff Specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Brisbane. 

 

A/Prof Vasey holds an appointment with the University of Queensland as Associate Professor, is an Honorary Associate of the University of Sydney and would be delighted to assist GP’s and other Specialists in the management of all patients with solid tumours.

Dr Trevor Olsen is a Clinical Heamatologist based at The Wesley Hospital. Dr Olsen has dedicated an unprecedented amount of his career to clinical practice and the development of ongoing patient support in the field of Haematology and Oncology. In 1988 Dr Olsen along with Dr Paul Eliadis and Dr Ian Bunce established HOCA (Haematology and Oncology Clinics of Australia), doing so on the Wesley Hospital campus.

 

Dr Olsen completed his undergraduate training at the University of Queensland in December 1963 and went on to commence work in Haematology at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1966. Following a period as a research fellow, where he undertook original research on megakaryocyte proliferation, Dr Olsen was appointed as the Royal Brisbane’s first clinical haematologist. He was instrumental in establishing the inpatient and outpatient departments of clinical haematology there.

 

In 1975 he helped establish the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland. Dr Olsen has previously held the positions of Medical Advisor and President of the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland.

A/Prof Nicole McCarthy is a Medical Oncologist who obtained her medical degree through the University of Queensland in 1990. She underwent her internal medicine and medical oncology training in Brisbane and was awarded her Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1998. To further advance her academic career, Dr McCarthy joined the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, MD, USA) Medical Oncology Fellowship program from 1998 to 2001.

 

During her fellowship her main interests included clinical trials and translational research investigating new drug treatments for breast cancer, in particular inflammatory breast cancer and anti-angiogenesis agents. She also completed a Masters in Health Sciences in Clinical Research through Duke University. Dr McCarthy has also spent two years in Auckland and was the recipient of the Breast Cancer Research Trust Fellowship Grant. Dr McCarthy returned to Brisbane in January 2006 and has remained focused on clinical trials research. Dr McCarthy's work has been published in leading journals and she is an investigator on several grants including NHMRC and Queensland Cancer Council. Since September 2009, Dr McCarthy has held a position as Associate Professor in Medicine with the University of Queensland.

Dr Simon Durrant is a Haematologist with HOCA at The Wesley Hospital. Dr Durrant is also the Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and an Associate Professor with the University of Queensland.

 

Dr Durrant trained at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, University of London, spending most of his career as a Haematologist in hospitals across the UK until moving to Australia in 1991. Dr Durrant is a respected and successful Haematologist, as well as an accomplished researcher who has lectured extensively across his entire career.

 

Dr Durrant has numerous committee appointments including Medical Adviser for the UK Thalassaemia Society, Alternative Donor and Stem Cell Sources Committee of the International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry, Scientific Advisory Committee Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, Australian Bone Marrow Transplant Research Group, Australian Leukaemia Study Group and is on the University of Queensland’s Medical Curriculum Sub-Committees for both Basic Medical Science and Haematology.

Dr David Grimes is a Medical Oncologist based at Haematology and Oncology Clinics Australia (HOCA) at The Wesley Hospital.

 

Dr Grimes graduated from the University of Queensland in 1984 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1992. Following successful residencies at The Princess Alexandra Hospital and registrar and senior registrar positions at The South Brisbane Haematology / Oncology Unit and The Queensland Radium Institute at Royal Brisbane Hospital, Dr Grimes completed a clinical fellowship at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute New York in 1993 and 1994 specialising in bone marrow transplantation and medical oncology.

 

Dr Grimes continues to participate in clinical research and serves on several national advisory boards, he has, since its inception been convener for The South East Queensland Oncology group.
