General practitioners may refer patients for admission to The Wesley Hospital through a referral to an accredited Visiting Medical Practitioner (VMP).

Emergency admissions
Major specialties have an on-call roster of specialists to ensure there is always a consultant available to accept and treat acute admissions. However, patients may be referred to any accredited specialist with their knowledge and consent.
Elective admissions
Elective admissions are arranged through the office of an accredited visiting medical practitioner. In most cases a general practitioner would refer the patient to a consultant at their rooms where an elective admission could be arranged if appropriate.

The hospital’s Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) represents the Visiting Medical Practitioners (VMP) within the hospital and plays a critical role in advising the General Manager. Two General Practitioners (GP) sit on the MAC, maintaining the essential link between the GP community and the Wesley.

Dr John Lumley is a Colorectal Surgeon with a special interest in laparoscopic surgery and pelvic floor dysfunction. He has been practicing at The Wesley Hospital since 1992. After gaining his surgical qualifications, Dr Lumley undertook additional training in the Australian Post Fellowship Colorectal Training Scheme. Dr Lumley is experienced in all aspects of laparoscopic colorectal surgery, sacral nerve stimulation for faecal incontinence and pelvic floor disorders with access to colorectal diagnostics. Dr Lumley has been involved with teaching laparoscopic colorectal surgery since its inception 20 years ago. He continues to be involved with research on aspects of colorectal cancer. He is a member of the Australian Medical Association, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand.
