The Wesley Hospital School Internship Program

In 2012 The Wesley Hospital launched a comprehensive school internship program to inspire school students considering a career in the healthcare sector.

The program is the first dedicated intensive hospital school internship program to be held in Queensland.

A Valuable Educational Experience

The aim of the program is to provide students from the community with a practical and theoretical insight into working and learning within a hospital setting.

It will be a valuable educational experience and an excellent launching pad for the healthcare workforce of the future.

Clinical Education at the Wesley

While The Wesley Hospital provides exceptional patient care and a comprehensive range of clinical services across 35 specialty areas, it also runs a very strong clinical education school and the School Internship Program is now an important element of this.

Annually, at a tertiary level The Wesley Clinical School offers more than 1000 undergraduate clinical placements across all health disciplines and takes its responsibility of teaching very seriously to ensure a positive experience for the student as they journey to become a professional.

The Wesley Clinical School currently has formal partnerships with The University of Queensland, Bond University, Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, James Cook University, Australian Catholic University and Careers Australia College of Healthcare.

About The Wesley Hospital 2012 School Internship Program

The first Wesley School Internship Program will comprise 28 Year 11 students from 11 Brisbane schools to spend one week at the hospital from 3 to 7 December.

During the week the students will be involved in a range of activities including:

  • Presentations by and discussions with healthcare leaders
  • Tours of departments including theatre, wards and kitchen areas
  • Education sessions including learning new skills in simulation labs
  • Practical work placements with practitioners
  • Daily debriefing sessions.

More than 400 applications were received for 28 places in the program which caters for a range of interests including nursing, allied health, medicine and support services.

Ultimately, the Wesley hopes to inspire its school interns to pursue a career in the healthcare sector and come back to the Wesley for their undergraduate placements and eventually to work once they graduate.

Helena Goldie Project

UnitingCare Health Helena Goldie Project

The Helena Goldie Project is a UnitingCare Health initiative,
along with partner UnitingWorld, to assist their sister hospital
in the Solomon Islands. The Helena Goldie Project is in line with UnitingWorld and UnitingCare Health’s values of compassion, respect, justice, working together and leading through learning.

UnitingCare Health assists the Helena Goldie Hospital in the Munda province by teaching at the Helena Goldie College of Nursing and sourcing
much needed equipment. This support leads to more registered nurses thereby building the healthcare system to the benefit of all Solomon Islanders.

85% of the Solomon Islands communities live in poverty on remote islands. For many the closest medical facility is an outpost, staffed by an Assistant in Nursing, which is more then a two hour canoe ride away.

UnitingCare Health hospital’s (St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, The Wesley Hospital, The Sunshine
Coast Private Hospital and St Stephen’s Hospital) are now in the third year of supporting the project.

In 2012 the following UnitingCare Health staff will make two trips to the Solomon Islands
(April, September) to teach at the Helena Goldie College of Nursing:

  • Wendy Zernike (Director of Clinical Education at The Wesley Hospital and Program Manager of the Helena Goldie Project)
  • Rev Murray Fysh (Manager of Pastoral Care Department at The Wesley Hospital)
  • Gill Gray (Hospital Coordinator at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital)
  • Jo Hardcastle (Midwife and Neonatal Nurse at The Wesley Hospital)

UnitingCare Health is fundraising to help pay for the tuition,

accommodation and meals for a student at the Helena Goldie

College of Nursing which is approximately $3,000 per student

per year.

If you would like to assist the Helena Goldie Project by helping to sponsor a nurse, please click here to visit the UnitingWorld website to make a donation or call them on 1800 000 331(8:30am – 5:00pm, Monday to Friday) or +61 8267 4267 if you are calling from overseas.

The Wesley Art Program

The Wesley Hospital boosts the second largest private art collection in Queensland. The art works are displayed throughout the corridors, wards and private rooms of the hospital for the benefit of patients, visitors and staff. The works making up the collection have been donated to the hospital by  artists and hospital supporters. In addition other works are loaned by artists, private galleries, public institutions and schools.

The Wesley Hospital maintains an active art program and firmly believes that art expresses the richness and diversity of human life, and the joy of the creative spirit within each of us and as such is an important part of a balanced community and a healthy life. The Wesley's Art Curator, Maureen Hansen, manages The Wesley Art Collection and the activities of The Wesley Art Program, which include artists' commissions and promotional events.

How to make a bequest in your will

A bequest in your Will, can leave a tangible legacy for future generations which will enable The Wesley Hospital to continue to meet the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of our patients.

Although many of us don't like to think about it, we should all have a Will. In the absence of one, your affairs will be handled by a court-appointed administrator, who will have no idea how you wanted your estate to be handled.

Click here for more information on The Wesley Bequest Society.

Making your Will

Having a Will drawn up is a relatively simple procedure and should include the following steps:

  1. First, seek expert advice - the safest way to make a will is to use a solicitor
  2. List your assets
  3. Decide who you wish to benefit from your estate
  4. Make sure you are satisfied that the Will reflects your wishes
  5. Keep your Will in a safe place
  6. Review your Will regularly.

To support The Wesley Hospital in your Will

If you wish to support The Wesley Hospital's work in the community by remembering it in your Will, may we make the following suggestion:

The following generalised wording should be used:

'to THE UNITING CHURCH IN AUSTRALIA PROPERTY TRUST (Q) for the general purposes of THE WESLEY HOSPITAL, Auchenflower with the Queensland Synod of The Uniting Church in Australia, the receipt of the Secretary for the time being of the said Synod to be a sufficient discharge to my Trustees'.

With thousands of people each year using the services of the Wesley, your bequest will go to help many people in many different ways.
