Volunteering at the Wesley

 

The Wesley Hospital has more than 400 volunteers who provide support and services to patients and staff in over 35 areas of the hospital. Our volunteers come from varied backgrounds with many life experiences and skills; they range from retirees to students.

 

Services provided by the volunteer program include: 

• Transporting patients to and from hospital appointments
• Accompanying patients to their ward or clinic
• Providing information and directions to patients and visitors to the hospital
• Providing administrative assistance such as mail outs, preparation of patient charts, laminating, collating and photocopying
• Providing a book and magazine service to patients and delivering flowers to patients
• Delivering scripts to pharmacy and collecting charts an x-rays
• Assisting in the hospital gift shop.

New Volunteer Companion Program

We have recently launched a new volunteer program – called Volunteer Companions - where volunteers spend time one on one with patients. It can be as simple as having a cup of tea/coffee and a chat, reading a book or newspaper, playing board or card games, or helping with other one on one activitites.

 

To be successful in this volunteer position, you will require:

• A pleasant, positive nature with good communication skills

• Good time management

• Confidence to have conversations with patients, friendly and caring

• An ability to take direction and work with limited supervision

• An ability to interact in a team and to interact positively and good-naturedly

• An ability to maintain and respect confidentiality.
