UnitingCare Health Helena Goldie Project

 

The Helena Goldie Project is a UnitingCare Health initiative,
along with partner UnitingWorld, to assist their sister hospital
in the Solomon Islands. The Helena Goldie Project is in line with UnitingWorld and UnitingCare Health’s values of compassion, respect, justice, working together and leading through learning.

 

UnitingCare Health assists the Helena Goldie Hospital in the Munda province by teaching at the Helena Goldie College of Nursing and sourcing
much needed equipment. This support leads to more registered nurses thereby building the healthcare system to the benefit of all Solomon Islanders.

 

85% of the Solomon Islands communities live in poverty on remote islands. For many the closest medical facility is an outpost, staffed by an Assistant in Nursing, which is more then a two hour canoe ride away.

 

UnitingCare Health hospital’s (St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, The Wesley Hospital, The Sunshine
Coast Private Hospital and St Stephen’s Hospital) are now in the third year of supporting the project.

 

In 2012 the following UnitingCare Health staff will make two trips to the Solomon Islands
(April, September) to teach at the Helena Goldie College of Nursing:

• Wendy Zernike (Director of Clinical Education at The Wesley Hospital and Program Manager of the Helena Goldie Project)
• Rev Murray Fysh (Manager of Pastoral Care Department at The Wesley Hospital)
• Gill Gray (Hospital Coordinator at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital)
• Jo Hardcastle (Midwife and Neonatal Nurse at The Wesley Hospital)

 

 

UnitingCare Health is fundraising to help pay for the tuition,

accommodation and meals for a student at the Helena Goldie

College of Nursing which is approximately $3,000 per student

per year.
