Wesley cancer care team unveil tree of hope
At the centre of The Wesley Hospital’s cancer care wards is a special new place, one that honours courage, celebrates resilience and offers hope to those still on their journey.
Reflecting the many Jacaranda Trees which grow around the hospital grounds and bloom in purple once every year, inside the cancer care wards another tree is growing.
The Wesley’s cancer care team recently unveiled the deeply meaningful installation where all patients can mark a moment in their treatment journey surrounded by loved ones.
Our cancer care nurses together with a few patients have been the driving force behind the installation which also features a bell, as is a tradition in many cancer centres around the world.
“We wanted something that our patients could visualise, something they could do in a meaningful way and something uniquely Wesley,” said Melissa, Wesley Inpatient Chemotherapy Coordinator.
The result is a beautiful tree mural, where each leaf represents a patient. Patients are invited to write their name or a message on a leaf before placing it on the tree.
The moment culminates with the ringing of the bell – a sound that echoes through the wards, bringing plenty of smiles and applause.
The tree stands as a symbol of strength and community, and it’s not just for those who place a leaf.
“It’s something that other patients can see. They can see the purple leaves growing as they walk past, each symbolising a patient who has been here before them,” Melissa said.
After suggesting the idea to create something inspiring for patients, together with her loved ones, Steph became the first to place her own leaf on the tree.
“I suggested to Melissa that there be something to give hope to all the people who are hoping to get through chemo and live amazing lives after,” Steph said.
“Mel then suggested the idea of the tree and her and Liz, another of the Wesley cancer care nurses, put it all together, and it was such a special day.
“I hope that tree inspires people to push through those dark days,” she said.
The moment is often emotional but gives everyone an opportunity to come together and share in the celebration.
“It’s a really special moment, to gather around and be part of the patient’s last moments with us on the ward. It’s emotional, even for those who don’t expect it to be,” Melissa said.
“The patients get photos and video with their families, loved ones and treating team. It’s a joyous time and we love to see our patients off to hopefully live a quality life after their time here,” she said.
For everyone involved it’s about much more than marking an end, it’s about celebrating life.
And with every new leaf the message gets louder – hope grows here.
