Leading urologists from Australia and New Zealand converged at the Wesley Hospital last weekend as it hosted a prestigious Robotic Prostatectomy Workshop following its international recognition as a Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).

The workshop, convened by Associate Professor Troy Gianduzzo, Chairman of the Wesley’s Hospital Medical Advisory Committee and Urology Department featured key note presentations by world renowned prostate cancer authorities Professor Christopher Eden from the United Kingdom and Professor Koon Rha from South Korea.

The Wesley Hospital’s General Manager, Michael Krieg said the workshop was a fantastic demonstration of the Wesley’s reputation as a leader in innovative medical technology with strong links to thought leaders across the globe.

"We were thrilled to welcome leading specialists to the Wesley to continue to strengthen partnerships with some of the world leaders in urology.

"Our involvement in this event is a strong reflection of the quality of surgeons in our robotics program and a great opportunity to showcase the Wesley and its medical advancements to leading specialists around the globe.

Associate Professor Troy Gianduzzo said fellow specialists heard from national and international authorities in the field of robotic prostate surgery and obtained insights on current advances and points of technique.

"Procedures used to treat urological cancers have been evolving over the years, including the use of the minimally invasive, robotic surgery.

"Throughout the course of the day, attendees heard from local and international experts on the development in robotic prostate surgery," he said.

Associate Professor Troy Gianduzzo also pointed out that although treatment of prostate cancer had advanced through techniques such as robotic surgery, men still needed to be more proactive about their health.

"It’s critical that men get regular health checks and visit their doctor. Seeing their GP and talking about prostate cancer and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing is a really important step," he said.

The Wesley Hospital is a leading provider of prostate cancer detection and treatment, with urologists, radiologists medical oncologists and radiation oncologists working together to provide evidence-based treatment on the one campus.

Earlier this year, the Wesley Hospital was accredited as Australia’s first Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, reflecting its high standard of health outcomes and excellence in care.

The Wesley Hospital has had more than 4,000 robotic cases performed since 2010 and continues to lead excellence in robotic surgery.
