Dr Fraser Mackenzie is a Consultant General and Perioperative Physician.

Dr Mackenzie has been a Consultant Physician for 17 years and has recently returned to Brisbane from Toowoomba. Dr Mackenzie graduated from the University of Queensland with an MBBS and BMSc in 1990 and 1991 respectively. He completed his advanced training in general medicine at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in 2005 and practiced at The Wesley Hospital for 11 years followed by 6 years at St Vincent’s Hospital in Toowoomba. He has had several academic appointments in the past including the Lecturer in Medicine at Greenslopes Private Hospital in 2002/2003. He has been active at a committee level throughout his consultant career having served on the Medical Advisory Committee and Medication Safety Committee at The Wesley and more recently the Chair of both the Internal Medicine Craft Group and Medication Safety Committee at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Toowoomba.

Dr Mackenzie’s main interests include perioperative medicine, most acute and chronic general or geriatric medicine, clinical pharmacology, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and complex diagnostic and management issues. 

In 2021 Dr Mackenzie completed a Master of Medicine in Perioperative Medicine (Monash University). Recently the Diploma in Perioperative Medicine was also awarded to Dr Mackenzie by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in recognition of previous clinical, educational, committee and academic work in the field of perioperative medicine. Dr Mackenzie is commencing a second Masters of Perioperative Medicine with the University College of London in September 2023. He has written several perioperative guidelines for the St Vincent’s Hospital Toowoomba including; Enhanced Recovery after Major Urological Surgery and Guidelines for Bilateral Total Knee Replacement. Dr Mackenzie’s final dissertation for his Master of Medicine on the Perioperative Management of Obese Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery received the highest distinction.

Within the perioperative space Dr Mackenzie’s special interests include; the risk stratification and optimisation of the surgical patient; surgical consent versus shared decision making; the perioperative management of general surgical, orthopedic and urological patients; the perioperative management of the elderly patient undergoing surgery and reducing risk of postoperative delirium in the elderly patient.
