Dr Thompson has been a Consultant Urologist at the Wesley Hospital since 1986 and during that time has had wide experience in the management of many urological diseases.  Currently Dr Thompson is national Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Urological Surgeons (ANZAUS) and a member of the board of directors of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ).

Recently Dr Thompson has led a 2 year study in conjunction with radiologists Dr Rob Parkinson from Brisbane and Prof Jelle Barentz from The Netherlands. The study was undertaken by the Urology and Radiology Departments at the Wesley Hospital and has found that imaging the prostate of a man with a high or concerning PSA as the first investigation reduces the number of men who need biopsy by 50% and also reduces the over diagnosis of non-life threatening prostate lesions. The study results, published in ‘European Urology’ in July 2014, found that mp-MRI was a very powerful diagnostic tool and provided functional anatomical and pathological information with an estimated sensitivity of 92%. Dr Thompson performed the first MR guided biopsy in Australia in 2012 and currently provides MR targeted biopsy services for patients and also for his urological colleagues.
