Dr Akshat Khurana is a structural interventional cardiologist with extensive international training and procedural expertise across New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. After completing his medical degree (MBBS) in India, he pursued advanced cardiology training in New Zealand, where he attained FRACP and became a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ).
His special clinical interests include transcatheter valve therapies including TAVR (balloon-expandable and self-expanding platforms), transcatheter mitral and tricuspid therapies (MitraClip, TriClip, PASCAL), valve-in-valve procedures, PFO/ASD closures, coronary interventions and mechanical circulatory support (Impella, ECMO).
Dr Khurana has undertaken multiple high-impact subspecialty fellowships, including complex coronary intervention at Christchurch Hospital and Tufts Medical Center in Boston, followed by a dedicated Structural Heart Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York — one of the world’s premier centres for transcatheter valve therapies. His training included TAVR (balloon-expandable and self-expanding platforms), transcatheter mitral and tricuspid therapies (MitraClip, TriClip, PASCAL), valve-in-valve procedures, PFO/ASD closures, and mechanical circulatory support (Impella, ECMO).
In recognition of his U.S.-based training and contributions, Dr Khurana was conferred the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree by the New York State Education Department in 2025.
He is committed to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care, with a strong interest in building high-performing, multidisciplinary structural heart programs. He is actively involved in research and has presented at major cardiology conferences, including CRT, NYTVS, and CSANZ-ASM. His work has been published in leading journals including JACC, EuroIntervention, and Heart, Lung and Circulation.
