The Kim Walters Choices Program
The Wesley Hospital Kim Walters Choices Program was launched in 1998 by former Brisbane Broncos captain Kevin Walters in honour of his late wife, Kim, and her hope for support services to be established for other women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Kim found immense support, understanding and comfort from the cancer nurses involved in her care, as well as other women she had met with personal experiences of breast cancer.
Kevin Walters launched the Choices Program at The Wesley Hospital with the then director of the Wesley Breast Clinic, Dr Cherrell Hirst, a passionate advocate for support for women with breast cancer.
Choices is a tribute to the courage and strength of not only Kim Walters, but also countless other people who have experienced cancer.
Over the years, Choices’ programs have gone through a variety of changes and presentations, and in 2015 officially broadened to support both men and women with any type of cancer. In 2017, Choices changed its name to The Wesley Hospital Choices Cancer Support Centre.
Kim’s experience accessing professional support alongside appropriate peer support continues to be the foundation of programs offered through Choices. Choices’ programs are based on the best research evidence to provide the most valuable and safe care for our patients.
Despite our growth over the years, Choices’ original philosophies of support and sharing remain the same. We are honoured that Kevin Walters continues as our Patron.
