Why have a mammogram?

Regular mammograms and breast examination are important in the early detection of breast cancer. In fact, 90% of breast cancers are found on mammogram. Finding them early can lead to better outcomes. At our Breast Screening Clinic, you will get same-day results.

Note that a referral is not required for a mammogram at our Breast Screening Clinic.

What happens at a breast screening?

An experienced radiographer will perform the mammogram, explain the procedure throughout the imaging process, and answer any questions you might have. A breast care nurse will then meet with you (unless you have requested otherwise), to:

  • Give you your mammogram results.
  • Answer your questions about screening, breast cancer and other breast disease.
  • Talk to you about your breast history.
  • Examine your breasts and discuss breast self-examination.

We will discuss with you a recommended time for your next mammogram and if an abnormality is found, we usually offer further examinations a little later the same day, so there’s no need to wait and worry.
