From more than 580 nominations, The Wesley Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit team together with Dr Andrew Nathanson have been awarded a 2025 UnitingCare Full Circle and Reconciliation Award.

Taking out top honours in the In Their Shoes award category, Dr Nathanson and our ICU team were nominated by a past patient and their family for their compassionate and patient-centred care.

The In Their Shoes Award category recognises an individual or team from across UnitingCare’s services for demonstrating respect and justice for others.

In December 2024, a patient named Rob was admitted to The Wesley Hospital with severe pancreatitis. Over nearly three months — including five weeks in ICU — he faced multiple complications, but there throughout was Dr Andrew Nathanson, who played a pivotal role in providing care that was deeply personal and compassionate.

As he recovered, Rob made a point of naming Dr Nathanson as someone who truly understood him, adapting his approach to connect with Rob as a person, not just a patient.

Rob’s family echoed this heartfelt gratitude, praising Dr Nathanson’s clarity, empathy, and reassurance. They also expressed deep appreciation for The Wesley’s ICU nursing team, whose care and communication helped them through those distressing weeks.



Also among the finalists in this year’s Awards, was the UnitingCare Hospitals Biomedical Engineering Team – recognised in the Go for Green category for their leadership in sustainable healthcare through their MediCycle project.

By repurposing patient monitoring equipment that would have otherwise been discarded, they extended the technology’s lifespan, avoided thousands in new capital costs, and significantly reduced carbon emissions.

Their work exemplifies circular economy principals in complex healthcare settings, and their commitment to exploring ethical and sustainable options for decommissioning continues to inspire greener practices across our network of hospitals.
