Dr Ralph McConaghy graduated from UQ Medical School in 1979 before undertaking six years of postgraduate training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. Following qualifications in Obstetrics he spent nearly 20 years conducting quality general practice with a wide range of interests.  In 1992 he received his specialty General Practice qualification (FRACGP).

Dr McConaghy moved to the UK to gain more knowledge in oncology and palliative care in 1994. He later received a Master of Primary Health Care (MPHC) majoring in Palliative Medicine from Flinders University SA in 1998.  He was awarded the Chancellor’s Commendation for Acaedemic Achievement.

In 2004; Dr McConaghy received a Master of Medicine (MMed) in the management of pain from the University of Sydney. He finally left his practice in 2006 to work full time in palliative care and was awarded his specialty palliative medicine qualification (FAChPM).  In 2007, Dr McConaghy was appointed Medical Director of the Wesley Palliative Care Service.

Palliative care recognises the profound effects advanced disease has upon patients and on those who love and care for them. It is Dr McConaghy’s desire, wherever possible, to reduce the burden of disease and its treatment, provide practical assistance and support and engage the full involvement of patients and families, allowing an increase in their choice and control.
