$20 million theatre expansion at The Wesley Hospital nearing completion

17 November 2014
STAGE one of The Wesley Hospital’s $20 million theatre expansion and upgrade project is nearing completion with the advanced medical imaging equipment having now been installed in the new Hybrid Theatre.

The Wesley Hospital’s General Manager, Ann Maguire, said the project will enhance the Wesley’s state-of-the-art theatre facilities and result in a theatre complex comprising 18 theatres plus one Hybrid Theatre, three catheter laboratories and four endoscopy rooms.

“Our patients will benefit through modern amenities and the latest in theatre technologies,” Ms Maguire said.

In addition, the project includes the refurbishment and expansion of Post  Anaesthesia Care Unit (recovery), larger waiting areas for Day of Surgery Admissions and upgraded supply and support management facilities.

The new Hybrid Theatre combines a full operating suite with advanced imaging (CT and X-ray) facilities within the one theatre, and has the capacity for undertaking minimally-invasive endovascular (vein and artery) surgical procedures.

Director of Medical Services Dr Luis Prado said the new custom-built hybrid theatre is equipped with sophisticated Philips medical imaging technology, which allows specialists to perform highly complex procedures through small incisions, resulting in less discomfort, faster recovery times and fewer risks for patients with multiple medical conditions.

``The hybrid theatre’s imaging system provides high quality, high resolution X-rays and three dimensional images of soft tissue while lowering radiation doses substantially.’’

Cockram Builders commenced construction on the theatre expansion project in September 2012. Stage one comprises three new theatres including the Hybrid Theatre, two refurbished and extended theatres along with other support services and areas. Stage two, due for completion in February  2015, comprises two refurbished and extended theatres.
