Celebrating International Nurses Day at The Wesley
One of the many incredible things about nurses is the diverse impact they have.
From caring for patients and supporting their families, to leading in safety and quality and educating the next generation, they are navigators and advocates, the heartbeat of healthcare and so much more.
Today, on International Nurses Day and the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, we recognise and thank our nurses for the profound impact their work has on the lives of those we care for.
This year’s theme for International Nurses Day is focused on the health and wellbeing of nurses, highlighting the important role a healthy nursing workforce plays in strengthening economies, improving health systems and ensuring better outcomes for communities worldwide.
In recognition of this year’s theme, we asked our nurses to reflect on health and wellbeing, and how they take care of themselves and each other. Here’s what they said.
Cailin, Clinical Nurse Manager (Neurosciences/Orthopaedic Spinal Ward)
As someone who has only been a Clinical Nurse Manager for a relatively short time, I’m learning that caring for myself is essential when also caring for others. I try to prioritise setting boundaries between work and personal life, taking time to reflect and rest, and seeking mentorship to support my professional growth. Prioritising self-care allows me to remain present for my team and support them in the best way that I can.
For my staff, I focus on creating a culture where wellbeing is a priority. This includes collaboration in rostering where possible to promote work/life balance, encouraging regular breaks, recognising achievements, and promoting open, supportive communication. I regularly check in with staff to understand their needs and provide support where needed.
I feel that investing in our nurses’ wellbeing is not just about retention but that it has a flow on effect to the services provided. A healthy, supported workforce ensures the care we deliver is safer, leading to better patient outcomes and a more efficient workplace. When our nurses feel cared for and supported, so do our patients. We, as nurses, take so much pride in our work and I remain committed to promoting safety and wellbeing, and continuing to learn how best to care for those who care for others.
Jacinta, Assistant Director of Nursing Critical Care & Medical Services
On International Nurses Day, I take a moment to reflect on the importance of self-care and team support in our profession. Nursing requires strength, compassion and resilience, and it’s essential that we take care of ourselves so we can continue to care for others. I make it a priority to check in regularly with my team, creating a safe space where we can talk openly, share our experiences and support one another. A few kind words or a simple conversation can go a long way in boosting morale and reinforcing that we’re all in this together.
Outside of work, I find balance and peace by spending quality time with my family and animals. Whether it’s going out for coffee or relaxing at home, these moments help me recharge emotionally and mentally.
By taking time for myself and ensuring my team feels seen and supported, I honour the spirit of nursing not just in care for patients, but in caring for each other. This day is a reminder that our well-being is just as important as the care we give.
